Jamnagar, also known as the Jewel of Kathiawad, is a coastal town about 300 kilometers west of Ahmedabad. Built in 1540 A.D. by Jam Raval, a Jadeja Rajput leader who was forced to leave his kingdom in Kutch 469 years ago. The rulers in Kutch were known as Jam, they hailed from a community known for its bravery and generosity. Jam Raval came by sea route and landed at Nagna the then port. Since it was a new place the city he built was named NawaNagar. Later on, based on the victories he also achieved the surrounding areas. Jamnagar was the capital for four centuries of the prosperous princely state of Nawanagar. Jam Raval named the city to keep his name alive forever, Jamnagar.
Jamnagar is the home town of the world famous cricketers Ranjit Sinh and Duleep Sinh after whom the Ranji and Duleep Trophy are named in domestic Indian cricket. Other cricketers, Ajay Jadeja and Vinod Mankad are also from Jamnagar
Jamnagar is an important air and naval base because of its location, which is very near to the neighboring country of Pakistan. Originally a walled city with many gates, like all traditionally built Gujarat towns, Jamnagar received a facelift in 1914 A.D.. There are a number of ancient temples in and around the town.
The town is also famous for its exquisite handicraft items. It is famous for pearl fisheries, brass metal products and nature cures. Jamnagar is also famous for its marvellous tie & die fabrics and bandhani work.
Dwarka, one of the four most sacred pilgrim of Hindus of India, is situated in Jamnagar district 131 kms away from Jamnagar City.
